Dear Friends

I am Gijo Vijayan here, blogger, author, entrepreneur and traveller from Kerala, India.

I travel to lesser known places and write blogs about them.

My aim is to bring out real information about these places to the outside world.

Mamalakandam is a beautiful village, about 33km from Kothamangalam Town.

I started to Mamalakandam on 8th October 2022, Saturday 10 AM from Kothamangalam town. Along with my friend was Mani (Mani K Nair), who is my close friend and Owner of a Private Bus. He had lots of friends in that area because he had a bus service to Mamalakandam for many years.

We started on a Bike at 10 AM from Kothamangalam town and reached Mamalakandam by 12 PM.

How to reach Mamalakandam ?

While travelling from Cochin to Munnar Route, get down at Kothamangalam Town. Then either take a bus or Taxi and travel to Mamalakandam.

On the route you will find very beautiful and scenic places like “ “Thattekad bird sanctuary” which is famous for its birds, Kuttampuzha village, which is on the banks of the river periyar.

Following are some of the pictures enroute to Mamalakandam.

There is a beautiful and breath-taking forest area with full of elephants while you drive. Wild elephants have killed many people travelling through this forest, you need to be careful while travelling during night.

The journey on the bike was so thrilling that me and Mani sang song, and enjoyed the breeze and sunshine of the place. There are many good small hotels and Toddy shops (Palm/coconut) on the way where you get fresh Toddy. Toddy is a natural drink derived from coconut/palm tree and it is very good for health. The toddy shops also have excellent traditional Kerala foods, curries etc. Try having a glass of toddy, Kappa (Tapioca) and fish curry, you will love a lot.

The travel to Mamalakandam itself is so much entertaining. All over the place there is lush greenery and mountains. The periyar river originated from the mountains, from small spings and thousands of such small springs form the river. The water is crystal clear, non-polluted and drinkable. The forest area near Mamalakandam, Kuttampuzha is well protected. On the road through the forest, you can see lots of elephant dung.

The best part of the journey to Mamalakandam is through the forest area in Bike, after Kuttampuzha. It is about 5KM. There are steep uphill climbs and serpentine climbs. You need to be an expert to drive through the forest, be on the look out for elephants. Unfortunately we could not see any elephants.

The Periyar river is flowing by the side of the road we travel and it is a fantastic view in many places. People grow all kinds of crops here like black pepper, ginger, cardamom, cocoa, turmeric, coffee etc. You can buy pure spices from here.

On the route there is a place called ‘Double Kettu Chappathu Kadavu” where the stream of river flow on top of rocks, and there we saw many people taking bathe and having fun.

The forest view is fantastic, there and many adivasi people (Tribal settlement) live near the forest. The tribal people are protected by the government and they have special privileges.

Mr.Gopakumar — Elephant enthusiast from Mamalakandam

Ma and Mani stopped at the home of Mr.Gopakumar and had lunch (rice and fish curry). Then we went to visit three places near Mamalakandam

  1. Chamappara
    2. Koyinippara
    3. Talippara

There is Jeep safari facility at “Koyinippara”. The local Jeep safari is exciting. They will take you to the top of the hill and even you can camp there if you want.

People can go for trekking too. You must get all the permissions first for trekking and should have sound health before undertaking the same.
People with poor health must not undertake Jeep safari and trekking.
